Martine Whalley CV Two great influences on Martines work have been a trip to Venice and some Etchings by a Belgium Artist that belonged to her parents. Martine states her Textile Degree was a means to explore her interest in surface design, with textures and pattern helping to achieve special effects. Martine has conveyed the essence of an etching in her watercolour paintings by using a splatter technique to give an effect similar to an aquatint, finishing off with a pen to give the linear details. Recently Martine started to paint on canvas, again using a pen to create an effect and working on a large format to bring the viewer into the painting, as if walking along the canals. Martine states that she has always loved the way the elements have taken their toll on the buildings in Venice and she has tried to capture the feel of age and decay in her paintings. Take a wander in Venice with Martine.
