Leith O'Malley CV

Leith O’Malley was born with pencil in hand in Mount Baker in 1960 and at an early age was influenced by the illustrative style and cartoon work of American “Mad Magazine” and later by notable Australian Newspaper cartoonists Paul Rigby, Michael Leunig and American illustrator Rick Griffin. Before moving to country SA in 1986 Leith’s early work in Adelaide included freelance illustration contributions to various magazines.  He was quickly snapped up to provide regular cartoons / graphic advertisements for the Whyalla “Steel City Times” and later became the editorial cartoonist for the “Whyalla News”.

Leith made the transition from line to brush in the early 90s after workshops with renowned Australian artist George Gittoes.  Soon after these workshops, Leith co-founded the “Red Dust Contemporary Art Group” in Whyalla, exhibiting art work throughout regional and metropolitan galleries.  In 1999 Leith won the Whyalla Industrial Art Prize for his large haunting oil on canvas “Industrial Refugees”.  Since this time Leith has continued painting and exhibiting his work, holding a number of commissions for art work and being invited to contribute to several touring exhibitions.  He was also the feature artist in a recent edition of the Australian Art Magazine “Artist’s Palette”.

Leith still pinches himself regularly about this regional painter having his art work viewed, praised and purchased by people all over the world.  Leith was asked to join a Gallery of international artists at a prominent New York Jazz site, supply graphic art work for a French Newspaper, a Los Angeles Production Company, the US Coast Guard, a British University and major Australian and overseas companies.  He feels that the world really is becoming a smaller place!  He has also been commissioned to paint for many commercial organisations and individuals, which can be arranged through this Gallery.
